Toshiba XE2 and X2 are slim 3DTVs

Toshiba has announced two new flat panel TV ranges called XE2 and X2. Both are 3DTVs with 3 terabyte hard drives, and the latter X2 also has a LED local dimming backlight

Toshiba will be releasing 55-inch 55XE2, 46-inch 46XE2 and 55-inch 55X2 soon in their Regza range. All of the three models can reproduce 3D images and have 2D->3D conversion.

XE2 is a series of very slim models with Edge LED backlight. The X2 is a backlit LED model with local dimming which should provide a dynamic contrast ratio of 9.000.000:1 according to Toshiba. Toshiba also mentions 240 Hz and 1000 cd/m2 brightness.

Toshiba has built these new TVs in a minimalistic black frame with a floating speaker at the bottom.

3 terabyte hard drive
But that’s not all. Toshiba has also incorporated a 3 terabyte hard drive. 2 terabytes are reserved for the Time shift function that lets you pause and rewind live TV broadcasting.

DLNA is also an option and Toshiba has been so kind as to integrate an Opera Browser to allow the user to browse the internet freely. Like all of the other flat panel TV manufacturers Toshiba has chosen the active 3D system which means that you require active 3D shutter glasses to enjoy 3D content.

Finally, Toshiba mentions a feature to connect a Blu-ray recorder to record straight onto the optical media from the XE2/X2 TV.

Prices
Toshiba plans to roll these TVs out in Japan later this year and you can probably expect a US release in the end of 2010. No words on a European launch.

The TVs aren’t exactly cheap either. The flagship 55X2 model will cost $11,500 and arrive in October. The 55XE2 model will cost $8,000 and 46XE2 will cost $6,900 when they arrive in September/October.
