Gorilla glass to make flat screens more robust

In the future more and more flat panel TVs will be equipped with an extremely strong and scratch free type of glass called Gorilla glass. This can make more robust TVs that are not damaged under transport or in the home. At least if we are to trust the American industry glass manufacturer Corning. 

Gorilla glass creates stronger flat panel TVs
Corning Incorporated, which is a manufacture of glass, ceramics and industrial materials, predicts that Gorilla glass has a future for flat panel displays. Today Corning is already a leader in the supply of glass for display panel production. 


Gorilla Glass from Corning 

Flat panel TV - especially plasma - can crack or get scratched in the home or during transportation. With Gorilla glass the manufacturers can make flat panel TVs stronger and scratch resistant. Because of that Gorilla glass can also allow design constructs where, for example, the glass is extended all the way to the border of the frame without compromising stability.

Gorilla glass is already been used in some handheld devices such as the new Dell Streak and Motorola Droid X. 

Corning says that they have already landed their first two customers in the display industry, that plan to test the characteristics of Gorilla glass, and Corning expects that the first flat panel TVs with Gorilla glass could be on the market in 2011.

Gorilla glass is three times stronger
Corning proclaims that Gorilla glass is three times stronger than glass, typically used in soda bottles. This means longer lifetime but it also means that you can create thinner and lighter glass, which may ultimately reduce costs (although Gorilla glass is more expensive).

Corning has already set up a factory in Japan to produce Gorilla glass to the many Japanese and Korean panel producers in Asia.

An analyst from DisplaySearch estimates that the use of Gorilla glass will add between 30-60 US dollars to the final price of a flat panel TV – at least in the beginning.
