Just a few years back, the Full HD resolution was unheard of in 32 inch flat panel TVs but in the recent years higher resolution has made it into smaller and smaller panels. Now Ortustech have developed a small 4.8 inch LCD panel with 1920x1080 (Full HD) resolution.

Some prototypes with higher resolutions have been exhibited before but never commercialized. Therefore Ortustech’s new 4.8 inch panel with full HD resolution is a record in terms of the smallest panel with Full HD resolution.

This progress is interesting because Ortustech is pushing the limits of the pixel dimensions. The high resolution on the 4.8-inch panel has a pixel density of 458 ppi (pixels per inch). In comparison Apple’s Retina-display in the iPhone 4 has a 326 ppi.

You probably don’t know Ortustech but you might now Casio. Ortustech is a joint venture between Casio and Toppan Printing. The new company intends to manufacturer small and medium-sized panels and they’re planning on selling the 4.8-inch panel for devices such as cameras and camcorders, as well as mobile phones and handheld video consoles in the long run.

Other details have been mentioned such as 16.7 million colors and viewing angles of 160-degrees, which suggests that the panel is based on TN panel technology.

The discussion about larger resolutions on flat-screen TVs has been active for years but at the moment the Full HD resolution is found in pretty much every TV above 32 inches.
