Currently OLED is mostly used in mobile phones and video players but supply is still very limited. At the FPD International exhibition in Japan Samsung wants to exhibit their new 7-inch Super AMOLED panel that will go into mass production from mid-2011.

The OLED technology is ready but the mass production facilities are not. Samsung is currently building a 5.5G (5.5 generation) OLED plant that will initiate mass production in 2011.
When this plant is ready, Samsung is able to create larger OLED panels and that’s exactly what Samsung is planning to do. At the FPD International fair in Japan, held November 10-12, Samsung wants to introduce a 7-inch Super AMOLED panel that will be integrated in devices from “mid-2011”.

The 7-inch panel is intended for the tablet market and the introduction might suggest that a new Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet will be introduced in mid-2011. The 7-inch panel has a 1200x600 resolution and the characteristics of the OLED panel technology such as perfect contrast, very fast response time, wide viewing angles and true colors.
Samsung is currently experiencing high demands for OLED panels and recently HTC had to replace the OLED panels in one of their phones with LCD panels. Samsung’s own Wave phone and a few Nokia devices are some of the few devices today that utilize OLED panels.
Samsung’s 5.5G factory will boost monthly production of small and medium size OLED panels from 3 million panels at the moment (from Samsung’s smaller OLED factory) to 30 million panels.
