OLED is considered the next big thing in display technology and rumors about Apple products with OLED screens have been around for some years now. Apple has now filed three OLED patents for multi touch OLED panels

Let us take a quick look at Apple’s three new OLED patents. Apple uses an iPad device for the patent description but these patents could basically apply to all of Apple’s products.
The first one is about driving an OLED panel via a multi touch sensor technology. See the illustration below.

The second one describes how Apple plans to guide signal routing for an OLED panel with an integrated multi touch sensor layer.

The third patent relates to how the touch sensor configuration is integrated onto an OLED display.
OLED in Apple products
Apple continues to show interest in the OLED technology for popular devices such as iPhone, iPod and iPad. All of these products still use LCD panels.
The main problem with OLED at the moment is the limited production capacity. Both Samsung and LG are currently ramping up OLED production capacity for small size OLED screens but the factories aren’t ready yet.
