Asia-based Digitimes has taken a look at the most recent updates to Samsung, Sony and LG’s OLED plans for the coming years and has some interesting news to report. Samsung will begin test production of 32-inch OLED-TVs.
Samsung, Sony and LG’s OLED plans
LG has already announced a 31-inch OLED-TV, Sony recently announced 24.5-inch and 16.5-inch OLED monitors for professional use and Samsung has exhibited OLED panels on trade fairs many times. But how close are we to actual consumer products?
LG’s 31-inch OLED-TV
According to Digitimes the age of OLED is approaching. OLED panels are already used in small handheld devices such as mobile phones and video players but only LG and Sony has OLED-TV or OLED monitors available, and the prices are extremely high.
Digitimes also says that LG will have the capacity to mass produce 30-inch OLED-TV panels by year’s end. Samsung has a test production of 32-inch OLED-TV planned for the second half of 2012.
Sony’s new Trimaster OLED monitors
According to the same sources LG will have an 8G (8th generation) volume production capacity ready in 2011. Samsung will begin to invest in 8G OLED production in the third quarter of 2011. Sony has no plans to invest heavily in a production plant.
Most LCD-TV panels are manufactured at 8G production plants today and an 8G plant is required to manufacture large size TV panels. An 8G OLED plant would also mean that production prices could be reduced dramatically. Therefore it is expected that once the 8G OLED plants are up and running, we will start seeing consumer OLED-TVs at semi-premium prices - although realistic and much closer to the prices of high-end LCD and plasma TVs.
