Samsung has joined the group of dreamers that hope to bring glasses-free 3D TVs to the market in the near future. At the FPD fair in China Samsung has exhibited a 55-inch 3D LCD-TV that doesn’t require 3D glasses.

All manufacturers have released 3D TVs that requires 3D glasses and many have also exhibited 3D TVs with the need for 3D glasses. Samsung has just exhibited a glasses-free 55-inch 3D LCD-TV prototype.

The 55-inch 3D TV has nine viewpoints that creates a 3D effect and the optimal viewing distance is 2.5 meters to 5 meters. It’s a LCD-TV with standard CCFL lamps but Samsung says that they can easily replace it with LEDs.

The 3D effect is created with the help of two LCD panels. The first LCD panel functions as a lens to provide different images to the right and left eyes. When this optical refraction index is not changed the TV creates standard 2D. Most previous glasses-free 3D TVs have only been able to show 2D.

Samsung says that it’s a 1920x1080 Full HD panel with a 4000:1 contrast ratio. However, Samsung does not say if the 3D pictures are reproduced in Full HD. Previous glasses-free 3D TVs have never been able to reproduce Full HD 3D. We saw Philips glasses-free 3DTV some time ago that didn’t impress.

The prototype was exhibited at the FPD China 2011 fair. Samsung says that it takes at least three years to make it into a commercial product but there are no plans to do so at the moment.
