Samsung starts to mass produce transparent LCDs

Samsung has started mass production of transparent LCD panels today. The first panel to be mass produced is a 22-inch transparent LCD panel with 1680x1050 resolution.

Samsung plans to manufacture transparent color and monochrome panels. The first panel is a 22-inch transparent LCD panel with 1680x1050 resolution and 500:1 contrast ratio.

The color panel has 15 % transparency and the monochrome hits 20 %, which is still lower than Samsung’s  OLED prototype with 50 % transparency.

The LCD panels are extremely power efficient and consume 90 % less energy compared to normal LCD panels because transparent LCD panels have no backlight unit.

Samsung hopes that customers will use the new panels for advertising and education purposes.
