Philips was the first to introduce a flat panel TV in the extra wide 21:9 format. Since then Vizio has introduced 21:9 format TVs and the LCD manufacturer AUO has continued to innovate in this field.

AUO is one of the largest LCD panel manufacturers today but does not manufacture LCD-TVs themselves. Instead they sell LCD panels to TV manufacturers and with their new 71-inch 21:9 LCD panel they hope to convince potential TV manufacturers to use their panel in future TVs.
The 71-inch LCD panel is the largest of its kind so far. One of the main features is the passive 3D technology that has been integrated. That means that you only need cheap polarized 3D glasses to utilize the 3D features. The 21:9 format also ensures that cinematic movies are reproduced without black bars.
AUO has provided no further details about the panel but says that they now manufacture 21:9 format LCD panels from 46-inches to 71-inches. AUO says that they expect Chinese TCL to be the first manufacturer to incorporate the panel after its release in august 2011.
AUO is also exhibiting glasses-free 3D panels and public 3D displays for advertising at the Shenzhen exhibition in China.
