Gigantic globe built from 10,362 OLED panels

At the Tokyo Science Museum Mitsubishi has installed an impressive globe built from 10,362 small OLED panels. The globe called Geo-Cosmos measures 6 meters in diameter and hangs 18 meters above the floor. The combined resolution is more than 10 million pixels.

Some time ago Mitsubishi exhibited a gigantic OLED wall made from small OLED panels. Now Mitsubishi is taken their efforts one step further with the creation of a gigantic OLED globe.

The globe is constructed from 10,362 OLED panels, each measuring 96x96 mm and each with a resolution of 32x32 pixels. Pixels are placed with 3 mm dot pitch meaning that you can see small lines between the OLED modules – but the globe is certainly very impressive. The combined resolution is more than 10 million pixels.

Mitsubishi produces small PMOLED panels (passive matrix OLED). PMOLED panels are great for animated or semi-static content. For movies or games AMOLED panels (active matrix OLED) are required. Samsung and LG are currently manufacturing AMOLED panels for handheld devices.

The globe measures 6 meters in diameter and has been installed at the Tokyo Science Museum. It went on display June 11, 2011 and will also be used to illustrate global weather systems.
