Samsung seems to be mixed up in all kinds of legal battles at the moment. Earlier this month Samsung sued Taiwanese LCD and OLED manufacturer AUO (AU Optronics) over LCD patents. Now AUO countersues Samsung.
Samsung and AUO in a patent battle
Samsung is one of the largest display panel manufacturers in the world – and so is AUO. The two giants have engaged in a legal battle over patents in LCD and OLED panels.
Samsung sues AUO, AUO countersues
Earlier this month Samsung filed a lawsuit against AUO over LCD technology used in TVs. Samsung claimed that AUO infringe several LCD patents and added that Samsung intend to protect its investments in research and development.
Now AUO has filed a lawsuit against Samsung as a retaliatory action. AUO claims that Samsung is infringing several AUO-owned LCD and OLED patents. AUO claims that Samsung benefit from their patents in TVs, monitors, notebooks and in OLED panels for mobile devices.
Exactly what patents the two companies are fighting over remains untold. Interestingly, the two companies signed a broad cross-licensing agreement back in 2007 regarding LCD, TFT and OLED patents - but the relevant patents are clearly not covered by this agreement.
