Pictures and details of Panasonic’s third generation 3D glasses have been released. The new 3D glasses are the world’s lightest according to Panasonic, that plan to reveal them at IFA 2011 in Berlin this September. The glasses are based on the open M-3DI standard.
Panasonic’s 3rd generation of 3D glasses
Panasonic introduced their first 3D glasses with the launch of VT20 in early 2010. In September 2010 Panasonic introduced their 2nd generation 3D glasses and at IFA 2011 in Berlin this September Panasonic plans to announce their 3rd generation.
They come in 3 different colors and in three different sizes (small, medium & large). The small-size is called TY-EW3D3SW, medium is called TY-EW3D3MW and large is called TY-EW3D3LW. The 3D glasses are extremely low-eight, weighing less than 26 grams in small/medium and less than 27 grams in large (2nd generation weighs 38 grams). Panasonic even claims that they are the world’s lightest 3D glasses.

Panasonic has also incorporated a new rechargeable battery with turbo charging. That means that you can use the USB port on your TV to charge the glasses. A 2-minute battery charge gives you 3 hours 3D enjoyment. A full 30-minute charge gives 25 hours operation time. The lenses look slightly larger but we could not confirm that but Panasonic confirms that the lenses are thinner and lets more light pass through.
The new Panasonic glasses are also the first to emerge from the open M-3DI standard that Panasonic has mentioned a few times before. This basically means that the glasses can be used on 3D TVs from other manufacturers; if they also support M-3DI.
Lastly, Panasonic has incorporated a 2D mode that allows a group of people to select between 3D and 2D in 3D movies and 3D games.
It seems that Panasonic plans to reduce the price point. According to a few sources the new glasses will sell for 10.000 yen or approximately 90 Euro / 125 USD in September.
