Earlier in august Samsung, Panasonic, Sony and Xpand created the “Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative” to develop universal 3D glasses that can be used on every 3DTV from the manufacturers. Today Philips, Sharp, Toshiba and TCL have announced that they will join the partnership.

Today Philips, Sharp, Toshiba and Chinese TCL have joined the “Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative” in order to create universal active 3D glasses that can be used on all manufacturer’s 3DTVs.

That brings the total number of supports up to 8: Samsung, Panasonic, Sony, Philips, Sharp, Toshiba, TCL and Xpand. Only LG is missing from the equation but LG is currently promoting their Cinema 3D technology with polarized 3D glasses, like the ones used in movie cinemas. LG only uses active 3D glasses on their plasma TVs.
The companies will develop a standard for radio frequency (RF) protocols that will work with all future active 3D TVs from the manufacturers. The standardization will also include multiple types of infrared (IR) system, which are widely used today.
The initiative is targeted to be released in September 2011 and will be one of the topics at IFA 2011 in Berlin.
