Janus Friis, the co-founder of Skype, Kazaa and Joost, prepares to launch a new video-on-demand service called Vdio. Through the platform users will gain access to popular movies and TV content. Vdio hopes to compete with the likes of Netflix when it launches in the UK soon.

One of the founders of Skype, that went on to become a billion-dollar company, is ready for new adventures with a video-on-demand project. The project is called Vdio and launches soon as an extension to the Rdio music service.

The idea is not much different from other video-on-demand services and with Vdio the team hopes to take on competitors such as Netflix and Lovefilm. Janus Friis has previously been involved in a video service called Joost but Joost lacked quality content and was forced to shut down after a few years. With Vdio the team seems to have learned the lesson that “content is king” and they have already signed deals for popular movies such Breaking Bad, Ghostbusters, A Clockwork Orange and Karate Kid.
Vdio is expected to launch in the UK soon. Price and price model remain unknown. It is expected that the service launches as a web site but Smart TVs is an obvious expansion path.
