At last year's CES 2011 show in Las Vegas Samsung and RealD exhibited a passive 3DTV prototype that utilized cheap polarized 3D glasses. Samsung and RealD had plans to release products but now Samsung has decided not to partner up with RealD 3D and has cancelled the deal.

Samsung is focusing on the active 3D technology, while more competitors recently have joined the passive 3D technology that utilizes cheap polarized 3D glasses but also has lower 3D resolution.

And Samsung has also been considering passive 3DTVs in collaboration with RealD. ReadD’s 3D technology works by moving the active shutters from the active shutter glasses into the actual TV panel, which also means that only polarized 3D glasses are needed to get Full HD 3D pictures.

Samsung has now cancelled the partnership that was already announced as a licensing deal. Samsung has not issued any comments but RealD’s stock holders reacted promptly by sending the shares down 14 percent in the aftermarket. RealD says that they are now actively seeking a new partner for the so-called RDZ 3D technology.

Samsung, Sony, Panasonic and others announced at IFA 2011 in Berlin that they have entered an agreement to standardize active 3D glasses. If this deal has had impact on Samsung’s decision is unknown. Learn more about active vs passive 3D in this article.

Samsung’s 2012 TV line-up will be unveiled at CES 2012 in Las Vegas in January.
