Tactile screen technology is one of most promising display technologies of the future. Tactile screens can imitate different surface structures on the panel, making different areas of the screen feel different when touched. A company called Senseg expects tactile based screens in mass production “within the next year”.

If you have never heard of a tactile screen you will most likely find yourself exited after you have seen this video. In the video CNET gets a demonstration of a tactile-enabled screen in a tablet, from a company called Senseg.
A tactile screen imitates different surface structures
In the video Senseg demonstrates how a screen can imitate different touch feedbacks through the tactile system. The technology produces varying degrees of friction, and Senseg imagines that developers can utilize the technology for games, maps and more. It is based on an electrostatic field-based technology and has no actual moving parts inside, unlike some of the first tactile systems. Senseg’s boss says that the tactile tablet screen is still a prototype but they are already in talks with tablet manufacturers, and he believes that we will see the first products with tactile displays “within the next year”.
