Apple TV box hacked to run apps

Developers have hacked the Apple TV box to run iPad apps. Apps are expected to be a core element of the coming Apple HDTV.

Apple TV with apps

Many owners of the Apple TV box complain about the absence of apps. Because even though the Apple TV box has many nice features, it lacks the openness and possibilities of the handheld Apple devices.

Therefore a group of developers have taken things into their own hands, and hacked the Apple TV box to run iPad apps on a TV. It requires some creative controlling tools - but it works. However, it requires a “jailbroken” Apple TV.

The interesting thing is that the current Apple TV box can actually run apps. When Apple launched the box in 2010, they also switched to the iOS; the same that powers Pads and iPhones. Previous versions of the Apple TV box ran a modified version of OSX; Apple’s Mac system. The move is seen as an indication of Apple’s desire to bring an app platform onto the Apple TV in the future.

Apps is also believed to be a core element of the Apple HDTV. It obviously requires Apple to release a dedicated Apple TV SDK but the iOS system is the first step towards apps.
