Apple HDTV hints
Apple CEO: an Apple TV needs "something special"

15 Feb 2012 | Rasmus Larsen |

Apple CEO, Tim Cook, spoke at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference yesterday, and was asked about the upcoming Apple HDTV. He naturally did not reveal anything but he gave some hints to an Apple HDTV and answered why the Apple TV box is still considered a hobby. Hear the interview at the bottom.

Apple HDTV needs something special

Tim Cook believes that Apple needs “something special” before entering the TV category. Apple is not entered the market just for the sake of entering. When a spectator at the keynote asked; “What’s holding you back from entering the traditional television market, and what has kept the Apple TV in the hobby stage?”, Tim Cook answered;

- “The reason we call it a hobby is because we don’t want to send a message to shareholders that we think the market for it is the same as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc. We don’t want people to think the leg of that stool is the same as others,”

The Apple TV box is still a “hobby” but Apple CEO, Tim Cook, believes that it holds great potential

Tim Cook continued and said:
- “Apple doesn’t do hobbies as a general rule. We believe in focus, and only working on a few things. So, with Apple TV, however - despite the barriers in that market - for those of us who use it, we’ve always thought there was something there. And that if we kept following our intuition and kept pulling the string, that we might find something that was larger. The customer satisfaction is off the chart.”

He closed by saying that.
- “We need something special to make this a main market, to make TV a serious category for Apple,”

The remarks are certainly not definite in terms of an HDTV but Apple is clearly considering the TV market, and has larger visions than the current Apple TV box. Hear the full answer below, recorded by The Verge.
