Philips has unveiled a new compact media player box that brings Philips’ Smart TV platform to any TV. The media player offers TV apps, music playback, and DLNA streaming. It is dubbed HMP7000 (and HMP7001 in some markets).

Media player boxes have become popular in the recent years. The market is dominated by Apple, Boxee, Western Digital and Roku but Philips wants to get in on the act. Last year, Philips released HMP5000 but it never proved very successful so Philips will give it a new try with an updated HMP7000.
Philips HMP7000 will make any TV a Smart TV
The small box, with the curious design, will bring Philips’ Smart TV functions to any TV. Just connect it via HDMI and the TV will receive Smart TV features such as TV apps and video-on-demand services.
The media player also supports DLNA, which enables users to stream video, music and pictures from a PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone onto the TV screen. It requires a wireless home network and a DLNA app on the other device. DLNA software for PCs is included, Philips says.

Philips also highlights the USB functionality. Users can connect USB hard drives and play a myriad of formats, including DivX HD. The box also comes with built-in Wi-Fi.
