Sharp starts IGZO LCD panel production

Sharp’s IGZO based LCD panels have been mentioned a few times in the past and Sharp has now started production of LCD panels using the IGZO method. One of the first panels is a 10-inch panel with 2560x1600 pixels.

At Sharp’s Kameyama no. 2 display factory, IGZO production has begun. IGZO is short for indium gallium zinc oxide and is used for faster and smaller thin-film transistors that can power a display panel.

With IGZO Sharp can dramatically increase resolution and reduce power consumption on LCD panels, and at the same time lower costs.

The first three panels made with IGZO are:
  • A 7” tablet panel with 1280x800 pixels (217 ppi)
  • A 10” notebook panel with 2560x1600 pixels (300 ppi)
  • A 32” monitor panel with 3840x2160 pixels (140 ppi)

Sharp can also make larger high-resolution TV panels using IGZO. Last year, rumors surfaced that Apple was planning to use Sharp’s IGZO panels in their iPhones, iPads as well as the coming Apple HDTV.
