Japanese newspaper, Asahi.com, reports that Panasonic will invest 20-30 billion yen (around 245-370 m. USD) in a new 6. generation OLED production line at their Himeji LCD plant. Panasonic has not confirmed the rumors.
Panasonic to invest in OLED production
At CES 2012, Panasonic’s CEO reached out to the press and said that Panasonic is working on OLED-TVs. According to a Japanese newspaper, Panasonic is now moving forward with their plans.
Panasonic is already using OLED technology for lighting solution. They now plan to expand into OLED display production
Panasonic will reportedly invest 20-30 billion Yen in a new 6. generation OLED production line designed for manufacturing of OLED-TV panels. The OLED production line will be located inside Panasonic’s Himeji LCD plant.
Panasonic has not made any final decisions regarding the specific OLED production plans yet, but OLED-Info.com mentions that the final plans could include a partner.
Samsung and LG will launch their OLED-TVs later this year. In a related note, we can also mention that Sony is reportedly in talks with Samsung about buying OLED-TV panels for Sony’s future TVs. Sony has also shown interest in working with LG, according to sources. Last year it was reported that Panasonic was looking into a 8.5G OLED production line.
