Paper-thin glass for thinner & flexible displays

Corning, who produces glass used in many screens in handheld devices, has presented Willow Glass. The new kind of glass is paper-thin and can bend. It will enable display manufacturers to create thinner LCD panels and bendable OLED panels.

Almost every display technology include glass of some sort. Plasma TVs use many layers but LCD and OLED display panels are also produced using glass.

Corning, who also produces Gorilla Glass, has announced a new revolutionary type of glass that is paper-thin (literally) as it measures just 0.05 mm. But the most impressive feature is that the glass can bend. This is possible because of the glass is extremely durable.

It will not only allow display manufacturers to create thinner LCD displays but also flexible OLED displays. OLED panels can also utilize plastic to obtain the flexible structure.

Corning also mentions that Willow Glass can - potentially – be produced roll-to-roll just like regular newspapers, instead of as sheets of glass. See how in the video below.


Willow Glass is already being tested by manufacturers and will go into mass production later this year.
