Google Nexus Q streams music & video in the home

Google I/O 2012 is in full swing and Google has just unveiled a new "home entertainment" box called Google Nexus Q. The box streams video and music to a TV or speakers in your home via the cloud.

Update: Google has decided not to release the Nexus Q. Discontinued, vanished, dead.

Google has long been said to work on an entertainment device for the living room. And here it is. It is called Google Nexus Q.

The device can stream music, video, and YouTube videos from the Internet out through your speakers on onto the big screen in the living room. Google calls it a "social streaming media player" because you can also create music playlists and share with your friends and family. It requires an Android smartphone or tablet.

Nexus Q has built-in WiFi, bluetooth and NFCs. Music and video is not streamed from other devices but instead from Google Play (and the video & music Play lockers). The round box has a capacitive touch button to mute sound. Google also mentions 16 GB of capacity and a small built-in a amplifier that is powerful enough to power small speakers.

With Nexus Q, Google obviously plans to compete with Apple's AirPlay and Sonos' popular sound solutions.

Google Nexus Q will be available in 2-3 weeks in the US for 299 US dollar.
