Netflix surpasses TV channels in viewing hours
Netflix surpasses TV channels in viewing hours

If Netflix was to be compared with traditional TV networks and TV channels it would beat them all. In June 2012, viewers spent more than 1 billion hours watching Netflix. That is more than 80 minutes of daily Netflix-watching per person.

Netflix outperforms TV channels

Analyst Richard Greenfield has pointed out an interesting trend. Netflix recently announced that for the month of June more than 1 billion hours of video were streamed. Based on Greenfield’s math, Netflix has approximately 24 million US customers (and 90 % of total activity in the US), which means that on average viewers spent 80 minutes per day on Netflix entertainment.

This is quite significant since all TV services are competing for users’ time and attention. Greenfield also notes that the figure is rising. In December 2011, Netflix users enjoyed 64 minutes per day and in March that number rose to 65-70 minutes per day.

80 minutes per day would put Netflix in front of large US based TV networks such as ABC and CBS in the month of June. And if Netflix can continue to engage users, they could even take a definite lead. Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer expects the trend to continue with exclusive content such as House of Cards and Arrested Development.

The numbers are based on the US market where Netflix has most of its subscribers. Netflix recently entered UK and is also rumored to be coming to Scandinavia later in 2012. On-demand viewing is on the rise and users love it, it seems. The trend is sure to receive the attention of TV companies around the world as Netflix plans to expand in the coming years.
