Earlier in July we reported that LG is working on transparent, flexible OLED display panels. The large-scale project, funded by the Korean Government, has now been confirmed as the "Future Flagship Program". Over the coming years, LG hopes to market a range of display panels, and the goal is to produce a flexible, transparent 60-inch OLED-TV by 2017.
The Korean OLED project
The rumors were true, and as reported, LG has received a large sum of investment capital to develop and market flexible and transparent OLED panels. LG is not the only company involved in the project, however. Avaco – a manufacturer of OLED production equipment – is also involved. It has been reported that the Korean government has invested around 55 million USD but the number has not been confirmed.
LG aims to market flexible OLED panels and has received funding from the South Korean government
LG aims to create OLED display panels with distinctive characteristics such as transparency and flexibility. Small and medium-size panels are already being tested but larger OLED panels are also included in the plans. One of the goals is to develop and produce a 60-inch flexible and transparent OLED panel with ultra-high resolution by 2017.
South Korea has major interests in the display and OLED technology as it is of significant economic importance to the country. They hope to create 840,000 new jobs and export revenues of 56 billion USD per year based on the project. The government also hopes to push South Korea’s technological edge – especially in the competition with China.
LG has already started building a production plant, designed for production of small, flexible OLED panels for mobile devices. The plant is expected to be ready in late 2012 or early 2013.
