In a historical perspective, the flat panel TV is still a relatively new thing, even though most of us own one or maybe even a few. But how did our TVs look 5 years ago? In a series of galleries FlatpanelsHD takes a look at 5 years of TV design by every major TV maker. Last week we featured LG and this Friday we take a look at Philips.
Every Friday FlatpanelsHD takes a look a TV makers’ design tradition. Check back in again on next Friday.
Philips: 5 years of TV design
In this Friday’s TV design gallery we take a look at Philips’ recent TV design history. The Dutch TV maker is now owned by a Hong Kong-based company but the design has not changed significantly as a result.

Philips’ new DesignLine TVs
Ambilight is one of the elements that have shaped Philips’ history. It was originally made possible by Philips’ lighting expertise and has since been integrated in each year’s TVs. It started before 2008 – where we start our journey – but was also expanded to dedicated Ambilight TVs such as the Aurea models. Philips has also made efforts in the remote control area that have been created in aluminum over the years.
Shortly after, Philips introduced their Cinema 21:9 TVs in the extra wide format. Throughout the gallery you will also notice how soft, rounded edges and corners have been a characteristic for Philips’ TVs even after the brand was sold to Hong Kong-based TPV. We are excited to see what will happen to Philips in the future.
