Samsung and LG’s OLED-TV will not be available in 2012, reports Korea Times and DisplaySearch. Both companies experience manufacturing issues that have forced them to delay their respective OLED-TV launches.
No OLED-TVs in 2012
Many people have waited anxiously for the next revolution in display technology, OLED. But we have to wait a little longer. That is probably surprising as both Samsung and LG exhibited fully functional OLED-TVs in January 2012 at CES.

- “Samsung and LG recently scrapped their plans to mass-produce 55-inch OLED televisions this year as the companies are having serious difficulties in improving manufacturing yield,’’
"Manufacturing yield" can be translated to “how large a percentage of the total production of panels that is useable”. Samsung and LG seem to experience major issues with production even though their OLED designs are different. And if one of the manufacturers chooses to release their OLED-TV in 2012 to get the “first” bragging rights, it will only include approximately 500 samples, DisplaySearch says. The original goal was to produce 50,000.
- “We are making progress under our business roadmap. But high prices and lower manufacturing yield are problems,” says Samsung CEO Kwon Oh-hyun.
- “We will introduce our OLED TVs ahead of our rivals” says LG cheif Kwon Hee-won.
Therefore, mass production of large-size OLED-TVs is delayed once again, and it will be interesting to see what happens in 2013. Samsung concludes by saying that they need to do conduct more studies before initiating mass-production.
