LG working on new webOS Smart TV platform

LG has a lot of balls in the air when it comes to Smart TVs; the current Smart TV platform, Google TV, the Smart TV alliance and now this. We hear that LG is working on a webOS based Smart TV platform that could be exhibited at CES 2013 in January.

Remember the Palm smartphones that ran webOS? LG is said to be working on a new Smart TV platform together with Gram (that took over webOS at HP). The project has been underway for several months and the deal was struck in June 2012, webosnation.com reports.

LG is said to be working on a webOS based Smart TV platform

The webOS Smart TV platform is said to replace LG’s NetCast Smart TV platform that is currently used in LG’s, 2011 and 2012 Smart TV. The source claims to know that a company called Enyo is already building apps for the new platform and that Netflix is one of the first to be available. Pandora and YouTube apps are also under development.

But why webOS and not Google TV? Well, LG is said to be displeased with Google’s terms as well as the slow adoption of the Google TV platform, and they fear that Apple could enter the market. The webOS platform can run on the same L9 dual-core chips found in the high-end 2012 LG Smart TVs, which could mean that these are upgradable. However, this is pure speculation for now.

The big question; is this actually part of the Smart TV alliance’s future plans?
