Japan Display – the collaboration between Sony, Toshiba & Hitachi – is a relatively new player but they have exhibited promising technology, including a high-resolution 4.5” OLED panel and an impressive LCD panel.
Japan Display – remember the name
Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi have teamed up and formed Japan Display Inc (JDI) that produces displays for handheld devices. Japan Display has a goal to become the largest display manufacturer in this segment, and things are looking good for them when it comes to technology.
Japan Display showcase their first OLED prototype
At FPD International 2012 in Japan, JDI showcased their first OLED prototype that will go into mass production in 2014. The display is 4.5 inches large and has a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. This equals a pixel density of 326 ppi (pixels per inch) – similar to displays in high-end smartphones today. It has not been possible to mass produce OLED displays with such high pixel density until now, except when inferior PenTile pixels were used. JDI originally planned to start OLED mass production in 2013 but this particular panel will not be ready until 2014.
The high pixel density should provide a stunning level of detail.
JDI also exhibited a new 4.38" LCD panel with Full HD resolution. This translates into a pixel density of 503 ppi, which is on a par with the most pixel-dense screens today. Full HD resolution is already utilized in our 40-60” TVs – but the resolution has now been fitted into a tiny 4.38" panel. No words on mass production plans.
Finally, JDI says that their 2.3" LCD panel with 1280x800 pixels and 651 ppi is going into mass production soon. The panel has been exhibited before.
JDI appears to be one of the frontrunners in the display technology battle right now and should be able to challenge Samsung and LG’s display technologies. JDI also produces displays for Apple’s iPhone 5.
