5 years of TV design - Samsung

12 Nov 2012 | Rasmus Larsen |

In a historical perspective, the flat panel TV is still a relatively new thing, even though most of us own one or maybe even a few. But how did our TVs look 5 years ago? In a series of galleries FlatpanelsHD takes a look at 5 years of TV design by every major TV maker. Last time we featured Sharp. Today we look at Samsung.

Every Friday FlatpanelsHD takes a look a TV makers’ design tradition. Check back in again on next Friday.

Samsung: 5 years of television design

Samsung was one of the first to really push flat panel TVs and has since pushed the technology forward with designs that have become thinner and thinner. It all culminated in 2012 with the ES8000 model that has an almost invisible frame and a cabinet that is only a few centimeters thick.

Samsung’s OLED-TV will redefine Samsung’s TV in the years to come

Samsung has found inspiration for their TV designs in Scandinavia and the South Korean designers have followed the classic, minimalistic thinking of especially Nordic designers. Samsung has also been one of the companies that really pushed glossy black and transparent plastic designs forward. However, in recent years, Samsung has increasingly focused on more exclusive materials such as aluminum.

Some people might remember Samsung’s collaboration with Bang & Olufsen that gave birth to a mobile phone but Samsung has also worked with Armani in 2008 to create an exclusive TV. Since thin, Samsung has presented the world’s slimmest TV, C9000, and the next move will be to go all-in on OLED-TVs that will once again redefine thinness.
