Samsung has been researching flexible OLED panels for some time. Wall Street Journal now reports that Samsung aims to release the first flexible displays in the first half of 2013 and that it will be a major push that could make smartphones more durable.
Flexible OLED displays coming
Samsung aimed to start mass production of flexible OLED panels in the third quarter of 2012 - which means a few months ago. The plans have since been delayed.

Samsung’s 0.2 mm flexible OLED panel could find its way into future Samsung phones
The latest update is from Wall Street Journal who has talked with a “person familiar with the situation”. He claims that Samsung is pushing forward with the flexible OLED panels as they see increased competition from LG and Sharp in the mobile display field. By replacing the glass in current OLED panels with plastic layers Samsung can create virtually indestructible displays.
WSJ reports that Samsung see potential in flexible – and more durable - OLED displays for use in for example phones or other mobile devices. No words on when the devices might arrive but the flexible OLED panels are being tested by customers and are expected in the first half of 2013.
