Netflix could be getting some real competition with the new Redbox Instant streaming service. Redbox will offer unlimted streaming and physical disc rentals for 8 dollars per month in the US. It will start out as an invite-only service later this month.

Redbox Instant will launch later this month in a partnership with Verizon. But you are not invited to the party – unless you have an invite, that is. Redbox will open up to the public later.
Redbox offers unlimited streaming and four nights of physical DVD rentals for 8 dollars per month. One dollar more will give you Blu-ray rentals instead of DVD. There is also some chatter that 6 dollars per month will give access to the streaming service without physical rentals but this is yet to be confirmed.

Redbox will offer no TV shows at launch but offer a library of popular movies; “Movies that really matter in the marketplace”, Redbox says. Partnerships include Epix and Warner Bros so there should definitely be some quality content available.
Redbox will initially be available for iOS and Android as well as Samsung and LG Smart TVs and Blu-ray players. Google TV devices will also be supported and more devices will be announced in the coming months.
No words on when Redbox Instant will enter the closed invite-only phase.
