THX, the company with the THX picture & sound standards, has released a new THX tune-up app for iPhone and iPad. The app helps you optimize picture and sound quality at home, with a simple calibration. The app is free until February 4th.

TV manufacturers continue to sell TVs with horrible picture settings so what do you do? A true calibration is preferable but you can also go with the suggested calibrated settings from our reviews. THX tune-up is a third option. It is less thorough but very easy and convenient.

Before you start you need to tell the app about your equipment at home. Afterwards the app can help you to optimize brightness, contrast, colors, and aspect ratio by using test images.

THX tune-up is only available for iPhone and iPad right now. It requires you to connect one of the devices to the TV via HDMI or wirelessly via Airplay and the Apple TV box. The app is free until February 4th so grab it here! An Android version will be available this spring.
