Netflix has big plans for exclusive TV series. The first major push is House of Cards with Kevin Spacey in the lead role. It has premiered today on Netflix with all 13 episodes available from start. Netflix calls it a “defining moment in the development of internet TV”.
House of Cards could shift the balance of power
Popular TV series have traditionally debuted on the major TV channels but Netflix wants to counter that with exclusive content, produced for Netflix only. As Netflix's Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos says; "the goal is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us".
House of Cards with Kevin Spacey is Netflix’s first major push towards exclusive content
The first major push is House of Cards with Kevin Spacey in the lead role and David Fincher in the director’s chair. Netflix also breaks the pattern of weekly releases. All 13 episodes from season 1 are available on Netflix right now. No delay. Season 2 will be available later.
Netflix sees this as an important milestone. A move that could shift the balance of power from the TV channels’ grip on content rights into streaming services’ hands. Netflix CEO, Reed Hasting, calls it a “defining moment in the development of internet TV”; not just because it is a major bet on the content side but also because House of Cards launches in USA, Canada, Latin America, the UK and the Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway & Finland) at the exact same time.
