Western Digital hopes to serve a worthy alternative to the Roku and Apple TV boxes with the new WD TV Play. WD TV Play comes with streaming apps and network streaming. It costs $70 dollars.

WD TV Play

This is certainly not the first media box from Western Digital but the latest WD TV Play is created to combine the best from the internet streaming world with the best from the network streaming world.

This basically means that you can access popular streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, Spotify, Pandora and more. Additionally you can access social media and other local services in your country (if WD has support, that is).

But WD TV Play is also a network player. By utilizing the open DLNA system it allows you to stream video, music and pictures from a NAS or PC/Mac in your home. Western Digital has not released full details on codec support but expect the most common ones supported. WD TV Play supports 1080p streaming.

The box comes bundled with a simple remote but you can also opt to control it via the app for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. The app is called WD TV Remote and is free.

WD TV Play is available here.
