Google updates Google TV to Jelly Bean

Not much was said about Google TV at yesterday’s Google I/O conference but some updates have emerged afterwards. Google is updating Google TV to 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with better Chrome integration and a new, revamped YouTube app. Flash is dead.

One of the most significant changes is that Google TV now allows partners such as Sony and LG to update their Google TV and TV boxes to the latest version of Android within weeks rather than months. This would mean that the upcoming Android 4.3 update will arrive faster.

Google says that they are also moving to the latest version of Chrome. Again, they promise faster updates in the future. Developers can now also start to provide premium TV content in HD within web apps. Flash has been killed on Google TV. Yes, dead.

Google is also updating the YouTube app with a new home screen interface, better playback controls and support for the new TV channels subscriptions.

LG says that they will update their 2012 and 2013 Google TV with the Jelly Bean update “in the third quarter”. LG will also bring their Google TVs to markets outside USA, starting with Korea later this year.
