Samsung's OLED TV plant to be completed by year's end

Samsung unveiled its first OLED-TV in 2012 but their successful Galaxy devices have so far taken up the entire OLED production capacity. Samsung’s new OLED TV plant will be ready by the end of 2013, ETNews reports.

Samsung's third OLED TV factory

Samsung is currently producing OLED panels for smartphones and tablets at two factories. By the end of 2013, Samsung will add a third; a so-called 6.5G (6.5 generation) plant.

At the new OLED plant Samsung will operate with 1500x1850 mm large substrates that can be cut into two 55” OLED TV panels or a lot of smartphone and tablet panels. Production capacity will be around 20-40,000 substrates per month. If the entire capacity is dedicated to 55” OLED TVs Samsung can produce 40-80,000 OLED TVs per month.

However, Samsung might decide to dedicate capacity to small OLED panels for mobile devices at the new plant. ETNews says that Samsung is already running at maximum capacity at its two current OLED plants. Samsung uses OLED panels in its Galaxy smartphones and tablets that are growing in popularity.

Samsung is believed to invest 1.7 trillion Won (about 1.5 billion USD), which is Samsung’s largest investment in recent times. Equipment installation will begin in Q3 and the plant is expected to open by the end of 2013. The plant will be named A3 as the current ones are named A1 and A2.

We hope that the new OLED plant finally means that we will get to see Samsung’s 55" OLED TV on the market.
