RED – the maker of movie production cameras – unveiled its REDRay 4K player in December 2012. After some delays the 4K player is now finally shipping out. It can be yours for $1750 USD.

RED’s 4K player is one of the first 4K media players on the market. The REDRay box is not just a player but part of a larger ecosystem with the Odemax network where TV providers and streaming services can offer apps for 4K content.

The REDRay player can output 4K video in 2D and 3D with up to 60 fps. Buyers can stream 4K movies from the servers where 4K video is compressed using wavelet compression and is delivered in 4:2:2 and 12-bit colors. The minimum requirement for streaming is 2.5 MB/S for the internet connection; so minimum a 25 Mbit/s internet pipe. Users can also playback 4K video from a hard drive, USB key or another source.
The REDRay 4K Player is now shipping
To control the REDRay 4K player an IR remote is included but RED says that the full remote experience will require an iPad and RED’s iOS app that is still pending Apple’s approval.
The REDRay 4K player has started shipping out to those who pre-ordered it for $1450 USD. You can order one through the RED store for $1750 USD today. However, the Odemax service is still not online.
