Apple has acquired the TV-related app developer behind the well-regarded Matcha.tv app that provided a searching platform for browsing movies and TV shows across different streaming services. Matcha.tv has reportedly been required for between 1 to 1.5 million USD.
Apple acquires small TV company with popular app
According to VentureBeat, Apple has acquired the small company Matcha.tv. Since January 2012 the matcha.tv app was available in Apple’s App Store but suddenly disappeared in late May without explanation.
The Matcha.tv app allowed users to browse movie and TV shows across major streaming services such as Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Amazon, and iTunes. The unified search field made it easy to find content and get additional information on ratings and actors. The app also provided recommendations and had social network integration.
How the matcha.tv app worked when in operation
Neither Apple nor Matcha.tv has commented on the deal but it has been officially confirmed. It is also reported that all employees will continue at Apple. We can only speculate on what Apple intends to do with the company, but a unified search feature on the Apple TV box does not seem completely out of place.
