LG has developed an impressive 5.5-inch LCD display with 2560x1440 pixels for smartphones. It has the same pixel count as most 27-inch PC monitors, and boasts 538 ppi.

We have long surpasses the barrier of what makes sense in smartphones, but display manufacturers continue to develop even denser displays that could potentially enable new types of gadgets with screens sitting close to our eyes.

Although LG’s new 5.5-inch AH-IPS LCD display is not one of those, but instead a display designed for smartphones, it still shows us just how far we have come. LG calls the display the most pixel dense smartphone display to date, based on its 538 ppi (pixels per inch). The same 2560x1440 pixel resolution is used in most 27-inch PC monitors that are almost 25 times larger.
The LCD display has been manufactured with LTPS (low temperature poly-silicon) and is just 1.2 mm thick.
LG makes no reference to actual smartphones in its press release but we suspect that one of LG’s own smartphones will start boasting 538 ppi soon. Maybe it is something the guys at Oculus VR should take a look at?
