UHD logo requires 4K & 60fps, but not Rec.2020

DigitalEurope has announced the requirements for the first UHD logo for TVs. TV makers are allowed to use the UHD logo on pretty much any 4K TV, as it does not require the wider Rec.2020 color space.

UHD logo requires 4K & 60fps, but not Rec.2020

DigitalEurope created the “HD Ready” and “HD 1080p” logos some years ago, and they have now announced the requirements for use of the UHD logo that you will see slapped on Ultra HD TVs in the coming years. Unfortunately, the UHD logo only requires TV makers to include the most basic elements of the Ultra HD standard.

Sony X900
Pretty much any 4K TV can use the UHD logo, except TVs without HDMI 2.0

It requires:

Native Resolution: 3840 x 2160 Pixels
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Colorimetry: ITU-R BT.709
Colour Bit depth: 8 Bit
Frame Rate: 24p/25p/30p/50p/60p
Audio: PCM 2.0 Stereo

So, TV makers will not have to implement the wider Rec.2020 color gamut. DigitalEurope says that the “these parameters will form a baseline for Consumer UHD Displays from their first market launches for the short to medium term”. We hope that more ambitious efforts will form a basis for a kind of “True UHD” logo in the coming years. For now, think of the UHD logo as the equivalent to “HD Ready” – it’s not saying anything of substance, really.

The actual logo has not been revealed
