Samsung and LG had already teased new phones with curved displays, and Samsung has now announced the Galaxy Round. It is the first phone to use one of the flexible OLED displays.

The OLED technology enables display makers to create flexible OLED displays, and the screen inside the Galaxy Round is one such. However, even though the actual display is flexible it is placed in a fixed, curved housing.

Samsung has not made clear what the benefit of the curved display is, except for a short video that shows the “Roll Effect”, which turns on the lock screen. The 5.7-inch screen has a 1080p resolution. This is one of the first flexible OLED displays to come out of the production line, so expect to see much more in the near future, likely new types of products that are actually bendable. Samsung also has a curved OLED TV.
Samsung and LG are both building mass production facilities for flexible OLED displays, and they are currently running trial production tests. Mass production is expected to start by the end of 2013 or in early 2014.
The Galaxy Round will only be available in South Korea.
