Sony has announced that they have sold 1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in the first 24 hours. That makes it the best game console launch in history, besting the historic PlayStation 2 launch.
Best PlayStation launch ever
The PlayStation 4 went on sale Friday and over 1 million customers have already picked one up in the first 24 hours, according to Sony. For comparison it took the PlayStation 2 three days to reach a million in sales during the launch in Japan, and the PlayStation 3 sold less than 100,000 in the first 24 hours.
- "PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment
Sony is, understandably, excited about the performance, and is looking forward to start selling the game console in Europa on November 29th. Europe has traditionally been one of Sony’s strongholds, whereas Microsoft has had a tight grip on the US market.

Some launch hiccups
The launch has not been without problems. Some owners have received defective units, but Sony ensures that the defective rate is very low.
Sony also experienced widespread PlayStation Network issues that made some games unplayable. EA games sent out an announcement blaming all issues related to crashing/freezing of EA games on Sony’s launch-day patch. EA’s announcement has since been deleted. Sony’s PlayStation Network was taken down for maintenance for some hours, and has since returned with much better performance.
