LG will introduce a new platform for Smart TVs at next month’s CES 2014 show. The new platform will be based on webOS and LG aims to offer a better user experience on the TV screen.
webOS-based LG Smart TVs are coming
LG already has a Smart TV platform called NetCast and they have also experimented with Google TV for a few years now. Despite improvements, one of LG’s executives admits that many users are not fully utilizing the smart features. LG hopes to change that with a new platform built on webOS.

LG bought webOS from HP in June 2012. The operating system was originally intended for Palm smartphones, but LG thinks it makes a lot of sense on the TV screen. LG is also reviving the Enyo project that lets developers create TV apps in an open-source JavaScript framework that is also cross-platform.
At an official event in Korea, LG confirmed that the first webOS-based Smart TV will be based on a 2.2 Ghz dual-core processor with 1.5GB RAM that will support multi-tasking
It has been speculated if LG’s webOS Smart TV platform will form the foundation for the Smart TV Alliance that currently includes LG, Philips, Panasonic, Bang & Olufsen, Sharp, Toshiba, and Loewe. With LG’s announcement it also seems unlikely that LG will fully commit to Google’s rumored Android TV project.
