Philips will announce the first Android-based Smart TV in the second quarter of 2014. The new 8000 series will be the first to use Android, and in 2015 almost every Philips TV will be Android-based.
Android-based Philips Smart TVs
Philips believes that Android is the perfect system for Smart TVs, so they will start to implement Android as a platform. Android will allow TV viewers to access the Google Play store to download TV apps and games.
- “In 2014, we will start the roll-out of Philips TVs featuring Android in the higher end of our product portfolio. We expect that consumer appreciation and take-up will rapidly grow. By 2015 already the majority of our Smart TVs will be Android powered. ” says Maarten de Vries, CEO TP Vision
Android is already the largest operating system for smartphones, and is also found in tablets. Philips believes that TVs is the next step, so they have integrated a quad core processor that should provide enough power to run all the video apps.
Philips also says that their Android-based Smart TVs will improve interoperability with Android-based smartphones and tablets, while still maintaining support for Apple's iPhones and iPads.
The first Philips Smart TV to feature the new Android-based TV platform will be the new 8000 series, and in 2015 Philips will expand the system to basically the entire line-up. The new 2014 models will launch in Europe and Russia in the second quarter of 2014.
