Just like Dell, Asus announced a new, cheap 28-inch 4K monitor during CES 2014. And just like Dell, they are exploiting the 4K hype to try and sell a 4K monitor with an inferior TN panel.

The PB287Q is a 28-inch monitor with an impressive 3840x2160 pixel resolution, but the fact that it uses a TN panel spoils the deal.

Quality IPS LCD panels has made a comeback in recent years, and fewer TN-based monitors have made it to the market, so it is disappointing to see the trend start all over again with 4K monitors that were supposed to represent the high-end segment.

Besides the 4K resolution, Asus highlights a 1 ms (g2g) response time, 300 cd/m2 brightness as well as two HDMI (with MHL) and DisplayPort connectors, but they refrain from going into details about the accepted frame rates. Dell’s 28” 4K monitor is said to offer 4K at up to 30 Hz. Asus says that the monitor also offer swivel, tilt, pivot, heights adjustments, and integrated speakers. It also uses a flicker-free LED backlight.

Asus PB287Q is expected to launch in Q2 2014 for $799.
