From TiVo founders: the $49 Qplay TV streamer

The Qplay is the latest media streamer in an increasingly crowded market. The idea is to curate the best videos from many different sources, including YouTube, Vimeo, Vine, and potentially pay services such as Netflix and Hulu, in one place.

The qplay is created by TiVo co-founders Michael Ramsay and Jim Barton. It will be available initially for $49 in an early adopter program.


The Qplay is a small video streaming box without a remote control. It connects to your TV via HDMI. Everything is controlled via an iPad app, but all videos play from the cloud, not unlike the Google Chromecast. The box is not app based, as the creators instead aim to curate interesting videos in one unified interface. Think the best videos/movies/shows from YouTube, Vimeo, Vine and possibly paid services in such as Netflix in the future.

Qplay will feature so-called Qs – queues – created by you, publishers, or other users. You can also mark videos for later watching with the bookmark button. The Qplay app is free to use, but the creators are thinking about potential premium services such as live TV channels and recording. All Qs will skip commercials in the videos and continue to play until you stop it, “transforming short-form video into a long-form experience”.
