Amazon Instant is now the third largest streaming service in the US and has surpassed Apple and Hulu, according to a study by Qwilt. But Amazon is still miles behind Netflix.
Amazon still far behind Netflix
Amazon surpassed Apple and Hulu in March 2014, jumping from fifth place in March 2013. Netflix remains number one and YouTube is second.
- “We’ve invested hundreds of millions of dollars in great TV shows and movies for Prime members and it’s working,” said Bill Carr, VP of digital video and music for Amazon.
However, Netflix is still dominating and is actually still growing. Netflix commanded 52.5% in March 2013, but is now representing 57.5%. YouTube fell dramatically from 28.2% to 16.9%, and Amazon has risen from 0.6% to 3%. Hulu has 2.8% compared to 1.5% last year.

Amazon has recently followed in Netflix’s footsteps by producing exclusive TV series from its streaming service. Amazon also launched the $99 Fire TV streaming box last week with access to Amazon Instant, but also other streaming services from Netflix and Hulu.
