Major PS4 update today - but 3D & DLNA still missing

30 Apr 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

When you turn on your PlayStation 4 today several new features will appear. PS4 can now download and install pre-ordered games in advance so the game is ready to play from day 1. However, many essential features that Sony promised to add are still missing.

PS4 downloads pre-ordered games

Update 1.70 has been released for your PS4. This is the biggest update for PS4 so far and it adds the ability to download pre-ordered games before launch. With this feature you are ready to start playing right away when the new countdown timer hits zero.

Sony has also added SHAREfatory; a video editor for game capturing. It lets you add special effects, cut clips and add commentary to videos. Afterwards you can share your videos on Facebook or export to a USB device.

Other new features include Paypal billing in the PS Store, updates to the Dualshock controller, HD live streaming and more. You can see the full list of updates here.

Promised features still missing

Despite several updates, many promised features are still missing. PlayStation 4 can still not stream video, music and photos from a PC or network HDD via DLNA.

The suspend/resume feature that lets you pick up from where you left in a game after the PS4 loads up from stand-by is not available yet. And the PS4 still cannot playback MP3 files or 3D Blu-rays like the PS3 can.

Sony has promised that the PlayStation 4 will be able to handle 4K videos at some point. Sony has not commented on 4K video since launch, but has made it clear that it is not one of the first items on the list.
