Netflix recently told customers to expect a price increase. It is effective as of now – but only for new members. The price will increase by $1 in the US and €1 in Europe, but Netflix is also introducing a cheaper streaming plan.
Small increase – only for new members
New members will have to pay a bit more to get access to Netflix, but all current members will continue to pay the lower rate for another two years. The new price for US members is $8.99 per month.
- "To continue adding more movies and TV shows and delivering a great streaming experience, we previously announced that we planned to increase our price slightly for new members," says a Netflix spokesperson. "That increase is happening today."

Netflix tried to split its DVD and internet streaming plan into two services in 2011, but the move caused controversy and outrage from members. Netflix is hoping to avoid a similar outcry and current members will likely be more than satisfied with a two year period without price adjustments.
Alongside the price increase, Netflix is also introducing a cheaper streaming plan for $7.99 per month. This plan will only stream in standard definition (SD) and is limited to one stream at a time.
